Summary of Field Work: |
To explore the diversity and abundance of octocorals and black corals, their commensal associates, and associated deep-sea fishes between 1000–2500 m on the continental slope of the Bahama Platform using an ROV, equipped with high-resolution color video, a dexterous manipulator, suction sampler, and insulated sample containers to return intact faunal samples to the surface |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
A support vessel with dynamic positioning capability for ROV operations to 2500 meters depth. |

Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
F.G. Walton Smith was requested for proximity to sampling location, crew familiarity with work area, existing research permits, and ability to deploy ROV Global Explorer to 2500 meters depth and with dynamic positioning for safe ROV operations in areas of steep topography. Winter dates were chosen to avoid hurricane season. 3 days mobe and demobe are required for ROV ops set-up. 14 dives are planned. |
