Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Summary of Field Work: We request two ten day cruises in the Santa Barbara Channel, CA in 2010 and 2011 to conduct biogeochemical field survey and to set up and conduct shipboard experiments to investigate mechanisms controlling the production and fate of dissolved organic compounds in diatom blooms.
Summary of Facility Requirements: We request the R.V. Pt Sur as a platform to conduct this work. We request the use of the TRIAXUS towed vehicle for the survey portion of this work. The proposed target time periods are to occupy the western portion of the Santa Barbara Channel during the spring upwelling period in April of 2010 and 2011.

Requested Ship, Operating Days and Dates
Year: 2010 Ship/Facility: Point Sur
Optimum Start Date: 4/1/2010 Dates to Avoid: We request that the cruise be scheduled in the spring (April or May) so that we catch the spring upwelling event in the Santa Barbara Channel.

Repeating Cruise?
(within same year)
Yes Interval: each year # of Cruises: 2

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: We propose to conduct two ten day cruises in the Spring of 2010 and 2011.
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
We have used the R.V. Point Sur as part of the SBC-LTER program and are familiar with the ship and its officers and crew. The size of the ship is ideal for the planned operation. The dates are tied to the Spring upwelling events that occur in the Western portion of the Santa Barbara Channel. We propose 10 day cruises based on experience with similar type of operations. We plan to conduct a TRIAXUS survey 2-3 times during the cruise, followed by 3 days to occupy a biogeochemical survey grid of 20 + stations, and an additional 5 days to set up experimental work.

requirements that could affect choice
of ship in scheduling.

We request the use of Radioisotopes (14C and 3H) for short term Bioassays. We have conducted similar experiments in the main lab of the Pt Sur during SBC-LTER cruises.

We request use of the TRIAXUS for surveying the physical and biological (fluorescence) conditions of the SBC during the cruises to provide larger context for our experimental work.
