Summary of Field Work: |
Our objective is to predict the acoustic characteristics expected from aggregations of hake and jumbo squid off the west coast of North America within the frequency range of tactical, low to mid-frequency naval sonars. To accomplish this we will:
Capture live squid and hake using lines and trawls Measure the material properties of jumbo squid and hake in shipboard tanks Measure target strength of both tethered and free-swimming individuals of both species at sea using over the side, shipboard acoustics Measure in situ the spatial and temporal distributions of squid and hake |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
A-frame and trawl wire, CTD with fluorometer and oxygen sensor, space for pole mount for acoustic instruments, |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
Coordination with second research vessel, Chief Scientist Guass |

Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
Wecoma is the smallest ship that can provide the support necessary for the planned science including net tows and acoustics. All equipment has been previously deployed from the Wecoma including a custom built pole mount for mounting acoustic instruments over the side. |
