Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project Title: Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) transformations in deep sub-surface sediments and its role as a source of "old" DOC to the water column Project Status: Submitted

Summary of Field Work: We propose to collect sediment cores from two locations: center of the Santa Barbara Basin (SBB) and center of the Santa Monica Basin (SMB) in July 2012 (Yr-1) and July 2013 (Yr-2). At both locations, we will collect surface sediments (0-50 cm) using a multi corer. We will also collect longer cores (up to 4 m) using a gravity corer in SBB , and a piston corer and/or Kasten corer in SMB. The need for a piston corer and Kasten corer for SMB arises from the fact that there are sandy turbidites at this location which is difficult/impossible to penetrate with a gravity corer (a reconnaissance survey conducted in 2012 in the SMB using a gravity corer confirmed the inadequacy of gravity corer for this site).

As the cores come on deck, they will be processed (extruded, sliced, then centrifuged or squeezed) right away to collect porewater samples and solid phase samples. Most of this work will be done in a refrigerated van. Gravity/piston/Kasten cores will first be processed on deck (cut into shorter segments; collect sediment plugs, etc) prior to porewater extraction. Most samples will be preserved for later analyses, but a subset of them will be analyzed on ship.

We will also collect surface- and bottom-water samples using a Go-Flo bottle.

Key analytes are as follows: dissolved organic carbon (DOC), methane, DIC, sulfate, nutrients, some major ions; natural 14C and 13C of DOC, methane, DIC.
Summary of Facility Requirements: CORING AND WATER COLUMN SAMPLING: A multicorer that will allow recovery of “intact” sediment-water interfaces for high-resolution porewater sampling. A gravity corer that will give us at least 2m-long cores from SBB. A standard piston corer and possibly a Kasten corer that will give us >3m-long cores from SMB. CTD and Niskin bottles. We will also deploy our own Go-Flo bottle.

CORE PROCESSING: We need sufficient deck space to handle the gravity cores and piston cores, and to cut them into manageable pieces. We need a refrigerated van to: (1) store multi-cores and sections of gravity/piston/Kasten cores, and (2) extrude the cores in an N2 atmosphere. We also need lab space for methane collection, and for general sample processing (centrifugation, filtration, some analyses including GC, titration). A torch will also be used in the lab. We expect at least 10 compressed gas tanks to be on board.
Summary of other requirements and comments: A major purpose of our work is to determine natural 14C signatures of dissolved- and solid-phase carbon in these sediments, including DOC which is notorious for its susceptibility to contamination. It is therefore critical that we have a “clean” working environment with minimal potential for 14C and organic carbon contamination. We will need to use a research vessel that has been swabbed for 14C, and refrigerated vans that have not been used for isotope tracers.

requirements that could affect choice
of ship in scheduling.

We will need a gravity corer (2-3 m), a standard piston corer (>=3m), and a multicorer. A refrigerated van is requested to process the cores at in situ temperature.

We will be collecting DOC samples for natural 14C, hence the ship and van must be swabbed prior to the cruise.
