Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

  Project Information
Project Title: Growth rates of bacterial taxa in coastal marine ecosystems Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Barbara Campbell, UDEL_SMSP Project Institution: UDEL
Project ID: 103248 Version #: 3
Date Submitted: 2/7/2012 2:42:00 PM Created By: David L. Kirchman
Date Last Modified: 7/25/2012 10:06:00 AM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE/BIO - 1233271 - Funded
Summary of Field Work: The main focus of the project is to examine microbial activity and biomass in surface waters of Delaware coastal waters, the Delaware Bay and estuary, and the Chesapeake Bay. Other standard biogeochemical properties will also be examined in order to understand the variation in microbial growth rates, biomass, and community structure.
Summary of Facility Requirements: The work requires a small ship with a CTD rosette, surface mapping capabilities for surface salinity and temperature (minimum), and deck incubators. Vans are required also for radioactive and general chemical work.

Repeating Cruise?
(within same year)
Yes Interval: 6 months # of Cruises: 2

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: We wish to sample in spring and fall of 2015 (Year three of the project). The goal is to do a transect of the Chesapeake Bay over four days during spring and fall.
We then will do a three day diel experiment at the mouth of the bay

Each cruise should seven days. So, the total request is for 7 X 2 = 14 days per each year
of the project.
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
The Sharp is an obvious choice for work in the Chesapeake Bay and for anyone based at the Lewes campus of the University of Delaware, home base of the Sharp. It is also the ideal size of ship for this work in estuaries and coastal waters.

We are flexible about the exact dates. Our main goal is to have two cruises in times that differ greatly in biological activity.
Work Area for Cruise
Short Description of Op Area
for use in schedules:
Chesapeake Bay
Description of Op Area: The cruises will consist of transect through the entire salinity range of the Chesapeake Bay and diel
studies at the mouth of the bay.

The radioactive work will be with 3H and 14C.

We also request use of the general chemical van. This van has proven to be very useful for carrying out some of our analyses which cannot be done in the wet or dry labs.
