Summary of Field Work: |
Using SCUBA, we will conduct field surveys and collections of coralline algae at 10 remote, shallow water kelp forest sites throughout the western portion of the Aleutian archipelago in Alaska. We will travel short distances from the UNOLS vessel to field sites using small, deployable skiffs. At each site, we will conduct visual surveys of coralline algae, kelp, and sea urchins following established protocols. At each site, we will collect coralline algae, lift them to the surface using air lift-bags, and at the surface lift them into the vessel using a ship-based crane. Once aboard the ship, coralline algae will be sectioned on deck using a diamond saw, polished, and packaged for transport back to Maine. We will conduct ship-board aquarium feeding assays using living coralline algae and sea urchins to elucidate the mechanisms potentially driving patterns observed in our field surveys. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
We require SCUBA diving operations. Aboard the UNOLS vessel, we will require a small crane/winch to deploy and retrieve our small skiffs, and to retrieve our field collections. We require ample deck space to deploy skiffs, and to section and polish collected corallines. Further, we will require deck or laboratory space to conduct feeding assays in aquaria. |

Dates to Avoid: |
In general, field work conditions in the Aleutians rapidly decline in August. Prior to 6/14, the PIs have schedule conflicts that can not be changed. Thus, provision of ship time in mid-June or early July would increase the probability of a successful expedition. |

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
|
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
We are flexible regarding which actual ship is provided, as long as it can be configured to support SCUBA operations, and has sufficient space to hold 2 deployable skiffs and allow for sample processing on deck. Our request for 18 science days allows for 1.5 days of science at each of our 10 proposed study sites, with a buffer of 3 days in the event that weather limits dive activities at one or more of our sites. We would prefer cruise time in June because sea conditions are favorable at this time of year for dive work, but have flexibility to also conduct our expedition in July or early August. In late August, the weather in the Aleutians becomes problematic for dive work. |

Explanation/justification for requested ports and dates of intermediate stops or to list additional port stops |
We intend to study the western portion of the Aleutian archipelago. Thus, using Adak as a start and end port will decrease sea transit times to and from our study sites, and will allow for direct access to the ship via air from Anchorage. |

Explanation of Science Party Requirements and Technician Requirements |
The PI, Co-PI, postdoctoral researcher, and 6 dive technicians will participate in the study. We will split our group into two teams of four divers for field work. We may require basic support from one operator-provided technician to deploy and retrieve the small skiffs, and to operate the ship-based crane to retrieve our coralline algal samples from the skiffs. |
