Summary of Field Work: |
Samples from brine seeps located at water depths between 800 and 3200 m along the continental slope in the Gulf of Mexico will be collected using the ROV JASON during two research cruises. During dives to six study sites, depth profiles of brine will be collected using novel sampling device, the 'brine trapper'. Several 'brine traps' will be collected at each site to obtain samples for microbiological and biogeochemical characterization. Monitoring instrumentation, including in situ rotary cameras and thermister strings will be deployed at the sampling sites for recover about one year later. The monitoring instrumentation will be deployed at two sites on each cruise. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
Meeting our project objectives will require two research cruises, preferably upon the RV Knorr, utilizing the ROV JASON. We propose to carry out cruises in 2010 and one in 2011. A short instrument recovery cruise is proposed for 2012 using the RV Pelican For the Knorr cruises, we will need a CTD rosette and hydro van, a cold van and a radioisotope isolation van. We propose |

Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
The Endeavor is ideally suited to carry out our proposed water column and benthic studies in the Orca Basin. We will be sampling across the chemocline in the deep anoxic basin and collecting sediment cores across a N-S transect in the Orca Basin as a follow up to sampling done in 2010 on this same project. |
