Summary of Field Work: |
The field work would involve one two-week cruise in July-August of 2014 and another in July-August of 2015 off the coast of central and northern California from very nearshore to about 100 km offshore. The purpose of the cruises would be to sample fog water and correlate the concentrations of methylmercury in fog to oceanographic processes and features such as upwelling, pore waters, shelf sediments, microenvironments including marine snow and plankton. The sampling locations will be determined strategically and in collaboration with shore side sampling sites. Locations will also be determined during the cruise using data obtained through shipboard analyses and remotely through satellite altimetry. The sampling period is approximate and is meant to correspond to times of high fog likelihood along the California coast. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
We will require a regional Class Research Vessel, R/V Point Sur. We will need use of the multicorer, CTD, underway data acquisition system, internet connections and possible support of some dive operations. |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
We will need communications to shoreside facilities via internet and perhaps cell phone and VHF radio. Small Boat operations/dive operations. Project amount above reflects only MLML portion. Total project cost is approximately $800k. |

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
We will require one cruise in 2014 and another in 2015. Same time of year |
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
The work will be mobilized from Moss Landing. Some time will be required to affix fog samplers to the ship. There is no travel in the budget so mobilization from Moss Landing is ideal. We will be sampling in Monterey Bay and may need to sample close to shore to ascertain the location of methylmercury production in fog. A regional class vessel is small enough to operate near shore and get access to harbors in northern California. |
