Summary of Field Work: |
This is a request for 2014 time on Kilo Moana, continuing a multi-year effort that has involved two cruises on R/V Ka'Imikai-O-Kanaloa (KOK) in 2012, one scheduled cruise on R/V Kilo Moana in 2013, and includes a request for two KOK cruises and one Kilo Moana cruise in 2014. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
The 2014 Kilo Moana request is primarily for bottom sampling with box corer and multicorer. It also requires mooring recovery and redeployment, CTD operations and multibeam bottom mapping in approximately 5000 meters water depth. |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
Use of US Navy vessel for this project requires designation of a US scientist to served as "American Scientist In Charge" during the cruise, and needs specific approval of ONR per charter party terms. Project will require contract between operator and DORD for ship use. Work is coordinated with AUV mapping operations (not simultaneous). |

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
Involves multiple visits to same general site by R/V KOK and R/V Kilo Moana over several years to map, sample and recover/redeploy current meter moorings. Does not require multiple visits by same ship in any one year. |
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
Continues ongoing collaboration between SOEST and DORD on field programs in this region. Honolulu or San Diego are optimum ports. |
