Summary of Field Work: |
This work will consist of four field campaigns in the north Atlantic. the overall objective of the study is to examine plankton and aerosol properties over the annual cycle. the first field deployment will occur in november/december of 2015. The second deployment will occur in May 2016. the third deployment will be in september/october 2017. the final deployment will be in march/april 2018. the cruise tracks for each deployment will be essentially identical, leaving from woods hole, transecting to ~40oN,40oW, following 40oW from ~35oN to 57oN (or vise versa), then returning to woods hole. project science has the flexiblity to conduct this transect in the opposite direction as well. during each cruise, measurements will be conducted on the ship's cleans flow through seawater system, from samples collected at depth at specified stations, and from air samples collected from container vans located on the foredeck of the ship. the project will also involve coordination between the ship and aircraft conducting measurements at low and high altitude along the ship track and downwind of the ship track. also during each cruise, autonomous profiliing floats will be deployed and ecosounder measurements will be conducted. a variety of optical and other instruments will be mounted on the deck/deck rails. radiosondes will be regularly deployed during the N-S transect along 40oW. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
We will need a CTD/rosette, wire time for optical deployments, cleaning of the ships flow through seawater system before each cruise, forward deck space for up to 4 aerosols van, deck space for a radioisotope van, deck space for bottle incubations, deck space for deployment of autonomous floats, wet/dry laboratory space,berthing for ~32 scientists, rail locations for mounted instruments, calibration of the CTD prior to each campaign, locations for securing gas cylinders, and locations for safe handling and storage of hazardous materials. |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
This project requires adequate space on the foredeck of the ship for up to 4 aerosol vans. Relocating these vans to an aft deck is not a viable option because it will compromise core measurements of the NAAMES mission. |

Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
a global class vessel will be needed for the NAAMES cruises. NAAMES will involve ~32 scientists on-board during each cruise. we require placement of up to 4 aerosol vans on the forward deck. movement of these vans to an aft deck is not feasible because it will compromise the integrety of the mission. we wish the port to be woods hole, which is the home port for the atlantis. there will be 4 cruises total for NAAMES and it would be beneficial to use the same ship each time so everyone is familiar with the set up. Each of the 4 NAAMES cruises targeted a specific event in the annual plankton cycle. capturing these events with measurements is a primary driver of the requested scheduling. |

The transect basically forms a triangle. the direction around the 'triangle' is flexible and will be dictated by science advantages and prevailing weather conditions. the location of the cruises is, in part, dictated by a required coordination with airborne science flights based out of the St Johns Bay, Canada |
