Summary of Field Work: |
We propose using AUV Sentry on R/V Falkor to perform in situ geochemical measurements, microbial mat surveying and mapping, and exploration of the deep hydrothermal habitats at the base of Loihi Seamount, Hawaii. We hypothesize that mass iron deposition at the base of Loihi seamount occurs as a result of ultradiffuse fluid flow, microbial catalysis of Fe(II) oxidation, and slow accumulation of the resultant oxyhydroxide minerals. The PIs have an established record of productive collaboration in this field of study, and have experience with the Loihi Seamount sites. |
