Summary of Field Work: |
The goal of the ECOGIG program is to understand the impact and signatures of natural hydrocarbon seepage on the Gulf of Mexico's coupled benthic/water column ecosystem. We will also continue to track impacts of and recovery from the Macondo/BP Deepwater Horizon Blowout. To achieve the goals of our program, we will collect water column (using the CTD rosette/niskins) and sediment (multiple corer and deep gravity corer) samples and carry out bottom water geophysical/geochemical surveys using a deep-towed instrument sled (that we will provide). On each annual cruise, we will visit up to 8 sites in the North/North Central Gulf of Mexico. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
For each cruise, we will need a CTD/rosette, MOCNESS, 0.322 EM wire for towing, ADCP, sufficient deck space for Multiple Core deployments/recoveries, a radioisotope isolation van, and if possible a cold van. |

|
Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
We proposed annual cruises in June 2015, 2016 and 2017. Since we are continuing a time-series data set, the cruises need to be within the same temporal window as our previous cruises which constrains the timing of the start of our cruises to between mid-May and mid-July. |
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
We have used the Endeavor for NSF and GOMRI/ECOGIG-related work since 2011. We are familiar with the ship, it's operational capabilities and the crew. This vessel is ideal for our proposed studies. |

Explanation of Science Party Requirements and Technician Requirements |
The size of the science party is dictated by the multidisciplinary nature of our work. One technician is needed to assit with processing of CTD ops and CTD and other shipboard data. |

Explain Instrumentation or Capability requirements that could affect choice of ship in scheduling. |
We will be conducting radiotracer experiments on our cruises in the UNOLS radioisotope isolation van.
|
|
|
Explain Major Ancillary Facilities Requirements and list description and provider for "other" systems. |
Our work requries a radioisotope isolation van. We would also like to have a cold van on board but realize space may limit that request. |
