Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project Title: Observation and modeling of bottom boundary layer turbulence in stratified shallow water Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Joe Calantoni, NRL_SSC Project Institution: NRL_SSC
Project ID: 104611 Version #: 1
Date Submitted: 10/20/2014 12:45:00 AM Created By: Joe Calantoni
Date Last Modified: 2/3/2015 1:10:00 PM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: NAVY/ONR - NONE - Funded
Summary of Field Work: We will quantify the influence of turbulence generated at the seafloor boundary layer on vertical mixing and stratification in shallow water outside the surf zone.

This work will be performed over two years. During the first year we will perform a pilot experiment to characterize the field site and take baseline measurements. The pilot deployment cruise will deploy two quadpods (large instrumented frame) and 9 ADCP moorings while performing bathymetric surveying and making CTD casts. The instruments need to be recovered during a retrieval cruise 4-10 weeks later.

In the second year, we will also perform a pair of cruises one for deployment and one for retrieval at the field site. We will deploy a cross-shore array (no deeper than 50 m) consisting of two quadpods and and a third smaller mooring. The instruments will remain in the water for 4-6 weeks before recovery. We will perform bathymetric surveying and CTD casts of the field site during both the deployment and recovery cruises. All work is planned to be performed in shallow water offshore of Pt. Sal.
Summary of Facility Requirements: We will need CTD/rosette, ADCP, bathymetric system, and sufficient deck space to stage and deploy/retrieve large quadpod (3 m square base and 2.3 m height) through the A-frame. We will supply our own line for deployment to use with ship wench. Ship crane for loading. We want to perform bathymetric surveying with ship system and hopefully our own multi beam system - need to discuss options for mounting.
