Summary of Field Work: |
We use a subset of the 3.5 kHz acoustic transducer(s) on the R/V Kilo Moana and transmit to the ALOHA Cabled Observatory (ACO) hydrophone; By moving the ship over a 60-km diameter circle we will be able to map out the speed of sound (temperature) for the area. During the first year, we will ride on the ship collecting data on cruises of opportunity on a not-to-interfere basis, with the purpose of working bugs out of the systems. In year 3 and 4 (April 2016 - March 2019), the emphasis will shift to collecting data specific to the project, either on cruises of opportunity, or on dedicated cruises. We are requesting four days of ship time per year to cover those instances where our use is more than “not to interfere,” such as running a radials+circle pattern over a full CZ; this will require coordination with other investigators. These five days (changed after "day" definition change) could be used either as a dedicated single cruise or incremental days on other cruises (e.g., ACO O&M cruise); we will work closely with ship scheduling to optimize this. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
Need to connect 3.5 kHz transducers via a project cable to main lab. Set up a few computers/power amp in main lab. Require Fugro-POS-MV precision ship/transducer position, and precise time. |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
This project has been significantly delayed by the problems with the Kilo Moana in 2016 and 2017. I will be requesting a no-cost extension of 1 year duration, through March of 2019 (4 years total). |

Dates to Avoid: |
As of now (Feb 2015) the schedule is very flexible. Would prefer time in the first part of project year 2 (per above) to show progress. This time is requested as collaborative. |

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
see summary and below. the 5 days requested assume one cruise (edited from before to incorporate new definition start/end of a ship day). |
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
In this second year of requested ship time, a "primary ship" cruise is best, as we will want to run specific patterns. However, the schedule is flexible and could still be collaborative and the time broken up. The schedule is flexible. |

Explanation of Science Party Requirements and Technician Requirements |
Need transducer mounted on stem, connected to data acquisition computers in main lab. Need precise CNav ship/transducer position, velocity, acceleration as function of time.
Will also want to be able to run the various ship echosounders (synched to our timing signals) as additional acoustic sources. |
