Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

  NTAS/MOVE  -  2016  -  Endeavor
  Project Information
Project Title: Northwest Tropical Atlantic Station (NTAS) Ocean Reference Station and Meridional Overturning Variability Experiment (MOVE). Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Al Plueddemann, WHOI Project Institution: WHOI
Project ID: 104843 Version #: 1
Date Submitted: 4/10/2015 9:12:00 AM Created By: Al Plueddemann
Date Last Modified: 4/10/2015 9:12:00 AM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: NOAA/OAR - NONE - Funded
Summary of Field Work: The work will be focused on surface and subsurface mooring turns (recovery and re-deployment) and will include CTD casts, acoustic data transfer, and other activities. One surface mooring will be turned at the NTAS site. Three subsurface moorings will be turned at three MOVE sites. Deployment and recovery of inverted echo sounders (PIES), as well as acoustic data transfer from PIES, will take place at MOVE sites. CTD casts ranging from 500 m to full ocean depth (5000 m) will take place at multiple sites.
Summary of Facility Requirements: The science party will supply equipment for mooring deployment and recovery (winches, air tuggers, winding carts, etc). Use of the URI TSE winch vs. a science party winch will be discussed. We will need all available deck space on the main deck and 01 deck for mooring equipment. We will use the A-Frame and the ship's large crane. Use of the HIAB crane will be discussed. We will use the ship's CTD sensors, deck box, rosette frame, and niskin bottles. Small boat operations will be considered at the discretion of the bridge. The ship's underway sensors (TSal, ADCP, met, etc) will be utilized by the science party. Ability to "patch in" to the ship's 12 kHz transducer for science party acoustic comms will be requested.
Summary of other requirements and comments: Clearance will be required, and pursued by the science party, for operations offshore of Guadaloupe. The responsibility for Barbados clearance will be discussed with the URI Marine Operations.

France, Barbados
Important Info on Foreign Research Clearances

Are you or any member in your science party bringing in any science equipment items which are regulated for export by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR)?
No If yes, have you applied for the necessary permits through your export control office? No
 Questions about ITAR/EAR regulations?

Narragansett, RI, USA None Bridgetown, Barbados
Explanation/justification for requested
ports and dates of intermediate stops
or to list additional port stops
The most efficient cruise track is Narragansett to Bridgetown, which has been done successfully in the past. The next best choice for ending port is San Juan, PR.
