Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

  Project Information
Project Title: REU Site: Earth Science on Volcanic Islands Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Paul Wessel, UH_SOEST Project Institution: UH_SOEST
Project ID: 104946 Version #: 2
Date Submitted: 8/18/2015 5:49:00 PM Created By: Paul Wessel

Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE - NONE - Funded
NSF/GEO - NONE - Funded
Summary of Field Work: This is a REU student cruise around the Hawaiian Islands. Due to its duration of 2-3 days we will map unexplored areas in the vicinity, collect underway geophysical data such as magnetics, gravity, sub-bottom reflections (3.5 kHz), and daily XBTs for sound velocity control. Dredging for rock samples.
Summary of Facility Requirements: Multibeam sonar, towed magnetometer, gravimeter, sub-bottom profiler (e.g., 3.5. kHz). sound velocity profilers (Expendable Bathymetric
Thermographs (XBT's)).

Repeating Cruise?
(within same year)
No Interval:   # of Cruises:

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: n/a
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
This is a student cruise for a REU site program at SOEST. We wish to take ~10 undergraduates on a short cruise to introduce them to ocean-going science. We prefer the cruise to take place as early as possible during their visit (June-July). If the Kilo Moana is not available then the Ka`imikai-O-Kanaloa could be a substitute.
