Summary of Field Work: |
Sample small jellyfish, zooplankton, large jellyfish and fish
1. Flow through zooplankton imaging system, “in-flow-ZOOVIS”: The instrument pumps water through an on-deck zooplankton imaging system continuously while the boat is steaming among stations to get the horizontal distribution of near surface zooplankton (30um – 3cm).
2. The ARIS sonar imaging system: The system will record images continuously while the boat is steaming to get the fine scale spatial distribution of organisms > 3cm including fish and jellyfish throughout the entire water column.
3. Towed zooplankton imaging system, towed-ZOOVIS: This system will be towed on an up and down undulated trajectory to get the fine scale spatial distribution of zooplankton and jellyfish (including vertical distribution).
4. 1 m2 square net sample to collect zooplankton and jellyfish samples for validation of imagery data and providing jellyfish samples for age analysis. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
1. An A frame and a winch (>1000lb)
2. Need to configure the flow through zooplankton imaging system to pump surface water through the system.
3. Need to configure the ARIS Sonar imaging system using existing deployment device for ADCP |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
Both our sampling time and sampling area are quite flexible. We request minimum ship time, 5 days in late spring and 5 days in late summer in 2017 and 2018. We could simply utilize other cruise opportunities in this region without requesting our own ship time. |
