Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

  SC FLOOD PLUME  -  2015  -  Savannah
  Project Information
Project Title: RAPID - Plume Dynamics under Increased Sediment Discharge following Floods Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: George Voulgaris, SC Project Institution: SC
Project ID: 105074 Version #: 2
Date Submitted: 10/16/2015 6:02:00 PM Created By: George Voulgaris
Date Last Modified: 1/11/2016 12:18:00 PM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE/PO - 1603957 - Funded
Summary of Field Work: The objective of the proposed RAPID work is to examine plume dynamics under increased sediment discharge and normal shelf oceanic conditions. The recent water and sediment discharge conditions encountered in South Carolina represent an unusual, potentially important regime of coastal buoyant plume which has not been studied before and we seek to see how increased water densities affect the evolution of a bouyan plume. The unusually heavy sediment load, following the flood, contributes to a reduced plume density anomaly, resulting in the reduction of the flow velocity affecting plume evolution.
Summary of Facility Requirements: We will need CTD/Rosette for hydrographic profiles and water sampling for correcting turbuidity values to actual sediment concentrations. Also ADCP for water profiling (due to shallow waters a 1200Khz will be better although we can work with other frequencies too.

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: The project requires 3 cruises; R/V Savannah will perform cruise #2
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
This is a RAPID response project in response of the SC Floods. We try to capture the elevated river discharges following the flood at various stages as the river discharge reduces over time.
