Summary of Field Work: |
AUV bathymetric and sidescan surveys of young submarine volcanoes and volcanic terrains in the NE Lau Basin (Tonga) between 1 and 4 km water depth, coupled with bottom photo transects. These will be used to direct ROV studies of the same on a follow-on leg. The auv leg is proposed to last 13-days, involving 11 days of AUV mapping at West Mata volcano and neighboring volcanoes, plus ctd/water sampling casts during times that the AUV is not in the water. On board activities include AUV data data processing and water chemistry. The first proposed study site on leg 1 is 18 hrs from Apia harbor, with neighboring sites an additional up to 12 hrs away at 12 kts. The time window we are looking at, based on the preliminary R/V Falkor schedule, is (approximately) 10/25/17 - 11/05/17. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
this request is for the AUV sentry or equivalent, to conduct the above-noted survey on the R/V Falkor. We have also included the MISO camera system as an alternate for the photo transect work, if available, and if SOI is amenable. In this case we would not use Sentry for bottom photos and instead use TowCam during the batter AUV recharge periods. |

Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
the R/V Falkor schedule is still being set by Eric King and colleagues. this Sentry request is part of a 2-leg expedition, with the second leg using one of the new Schmidt ROVs. They have discussed scheduling requirements with the Sentry operators at WHOI and tentatively settled on something in the Oct-Nov 2017 time frame. |

Explanation/justification for requested ports and dates of intermediate stops or to list additional port stops |
Apia is nearest port of operations. However, ROV MOB for follow-on leg may require heavy crane capabilities at Pago Pago or Suva, which will add transit days. |
