Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Summary of Field Work: The project will examine near-inertial currents and turbulence in Lake Superior, near Grand Marais, MN. The field work will consist of three traditional mooring recoveries and redeployments in 150-200 m of water during the summers of 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. During the summer of 2017, three additional standard moorings will be deployed and recovered as well as four Wirewalker moorings. Turbulence profiling time series and repeat transects of near-inertial currents will be incorporated in all of the cruises. Three 8-day cruises are requested during 2017 to maximize sampling while the large mooring array is deployed.
Summary of Facility Requirements: We require a standard CTD rosette, hull-mounted ADCP, and sufficient deck space and an A-frame for mooring deployments and recoveries. An over-the-side pole is needed to mount an ADCP that can measure near-surface velocities. An electrical connection and gunwale space are needed to power and mount an electric winch for turbulence and fast T-P profiling. Sufficient crew is needed for 24-h mooring and profiling operations.

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: N/A
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
The R/V Blue Heron is needed to recover and redeploy 3 moorings and profile turbulence. The cruise should take place during strong summer stratification to observe inertial oscillations. Five days are requested to allow for steaming time between sites, 1/2 a day of bad weather, time for instrument turn-over and ADCP compass recalibration, and ship-board turbulence sampling for several inertial periods.

Explanation of Science Party Requirements and Technician Requirements The cruises will involve deploying and recovering moorings and 24-h profiling currents, temperature, and turbulence. A 6 person science party is needed to provide two 3-person shifts during 24-h profiling, and assist with programming/downloading instruments for the moorings. A technician is needed to lead deck operations and occasionally operate the CTD and monitor the hull-mounted ADCP.
