Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project Title: Development of an ultra-fast method for continuous and automated analysis of dissolved greenhouse gases in surface waters Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: John D. Kessler, U of R Project Institution: U of R
Project ID: 105210 Version #: 2
Date Submitted: 2/18/2016 10:55:00 AM Created By: John D. Kessler
Date Last Modified: 7/28/2016 12:59:00 PM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE/OTIC - 1634871 - Funded
Summary of Field Work: We will be working in the Great Lake system to conduct field trials of instrumentation which we are developing to continuously measure greenhouse gas concentrations and natural isotopes dissolved in surface waters. This newly developed system operates shipboard and seawater is continuously pumped to it at a rate of 20-25 liters per minute. We will be bringing both the analytical system as well as the water pumping equipment.
Summary of Facility Requirements: All of the equipment necessary for the continuous and underway sampling and analysis of surface seawater will be supplied by the PI and thus the main requirements of the research vessel is a standard laboratory. We will test this equipment and collect data during transits on Lake Superior. Occasionally, we will stop at a station to collect water column samples for intercomparison, so a CTD rosette with 10L bottles is also necessary.

Lake Superior
Description of Op Area: We are testing the functionality of newly developed ocean technology and transits across Lake Superior would be an appropriate way to test. I have chosen Lake Superior to conduct these trials since this is the home port of the R/V Blue Heron. However, we could also work in any other Great Lake if that would help maximize the scheduling efficiency of this research vessel.

Explanation of Science Party Requirements and Technician Requirements We will be conducting two different operations. (1) We will be collecting continuous, underway data with a newly developed analytical system. (2) We will be collecting water column samples with a CTD rosette. The continuous, underway system is autonomous and will be the responsibility of the science party. The CTD sampling will be occasional (approximately 2 or 3 stations per day) and we will work with the marine technician to schedule and conduct all CTD sampling during daylight hours.

On this cruise, I will be testing my own over-the-side system for the continuous analysis of water. In addition to this operation, we will periodically collect water with a CTD rosette.
