Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project Title: LTER: CCE Phase III: Ecological transitions in an Eastern Boundary Current Upwelling Ecosystem Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Mark D. Ohman, SIO Project Institution: SIO
Project ID: 105240 Version #: 1
Date Submitted: 3/2/2016 6:24:00 PM Created By: Mark D. Ohman
Date Last Modified: 6/14/2016 2:33:00 PM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE/BIO - 1637632 - Funded
Summary of Field Work: (1) Process cruises: R/V Revelle, in summer 2017, 2019, and 2021: Conduct Lagrangian, water-parcel tracking cruises to measure nutrient fluxes and plankton growth, grazing, predation, sinking, and subduction in different mesoscale filaments and eddies associated with cross-shore transport in the California Current System. Multidisciplinary team of biological, chemical, and physical oceanographers.
Each of these 3 cruises needs to be in the summer (preferably early-mid summer, July) of strong mesoscale gradients in the region. Each will be of 32 days duration.

(2) Augmented CalCOFI: R/V Sally Ride, in each of 6 years (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022): 3 supplemental days added to 2 CalCOFI cruises per year for additional sampling of microbial, other plankton, and fish populations. Work to be scheduled and coordinated with CalCOFI cruises.

(3) Mooring servicing: R/V Sally Ride, in each of 6 years (2017, 2018, 2019,2020,2021, 2022): 5 days per year for servicing CCE interdisciplinary biogeochemical moorings.
Summary of Facility Requirements: (1) Process cruises (R/V Revelle): Seasoar, 1 m2 MOCNESS with 202-µm nets and full sensors, fully configured CTD rosette, isotope vans, trace metal clean van,EK60 or EK80 muli-frequency sonar. Other special equipment to be determined. High speed internet and berthing for minimum of 34 scientists required for each cruise. Science party will supply Trace Metal clean rosette, satellite-tracked drift arrays, Moving Vessel Profiler, and autonomous sampling devices.

(2) Augmented CalCOFI (R/V Sally Ride): Standard over-the-side sampling and laboratory processing equipment and vans. EK60 or EK80 multi-frequency sonar. Oozeki fish trawl (or equivalent) to be provided by science party.

(3) Mooring servicing (R/V Sally Ride): A-frame to accommodate tall mooring buoys, plus suitable winches, navigation, echosounder, CTD rosette. Stable working platform and excellent station keeping ability even in higher wind and sea states.
Summary of other requirements and comments: For process cruises on R/V Revelle, continuous, reliable internet service will be required on all ship headings to ensure uninterrupted tracking of over-the-side drift arrays and autonomous vehicles.
