Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project Title: La Jolla Internal Tide Experiment 2 Project Status: Submitted

Funding Agencies: NAVY/ONR - NONE - Funded
Summary of Field Work: The energetics of the internal tide and the resulting patterns of turbulence within the La Jolla Canyon System will be studied over the course of several months.
On a 7-day cruise in the late fall/early winter, 3 moorings first will be deployed along the axes of the branches at the head of the La Jolla Canyon System (1 km of the coast of La Jolla, CA). Six 25-hour CTD stations at 6 locations will then be occupied at various points within the canyon system. 2-3 months later we will return for a 1-day cruise aboard the R/V Robert Gordon Sproul in order to recover the 3 moorings.
Summary of Facility Requirements: We will need a CTD/rosette, ADCP, mooring spooler, sufficient deck space/A-frame for mooring deployments/recoveries, and a vessel with dynamic positioning capable of keeping station above complex bathymetry and continuous CTD casting for 25 hours.
Summary of other requirements and comments: This work is ideal for the instrument testing cruises aboard the Sally Ride or her sister ship, and is best suited for a vessel with dynamic positioning. However, the work can be accomplished aboard the R/V Robert Gordon Sproul if ship scheduling prevents the use of another vessel.

requirements that could affect choice
of ship in scheduling.

With the extra time provided by a 2-day recovery cruise, we will perform multibeam mapping of any under-resolved sections of the La Jolla Canyon System. We will also use the shipboard CTD to perform station work amidst complex topography for which dynamic positioning will be needed.
