Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

  Project Information
Project Title: Collaborative Research: Is nitrogen fixation widespread in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas? Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Rachel E. Sipler, VIMS Project Institution: VIMS
Project ID: 104601 Version #: 3
Date Submitted: 10/16/2014 11:18:00 AM Created By: Rachel E. Sipler
Date Last Modified: 10/6/2016 3:50:00 PM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: NSF/OPP/ARC - 1504307 - Funded
Summary of Field Work: Cruises will be undertaken to measure hydrography, nutrient concentrations, rates of nitrogen and carbon uptake and fixation, molecular characterization, and other dissolved and particulate constituents. Investigators will be deploying CTD rosettes to make measurements and will collect water samples that will require deckboard incubators (some of which they will bring themselves) for conducting incubation experiments.
Summary of Facility Requirements: We require a ship that can operate in Arctic coastal and oceanic waters that is
capable of deploying CTD-rosettes and has ample deckspace and flowing
seawater to facilitate incubation experiments. We require laboratory space for
processing samples indoors. We require wet and dry lab space. Stable isotopes (15N and 13C) will be used in incubation studies and will require lab space separate from where natural abundance samples are taken..

Description of Repeating cruise requirements:
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
This cruise will focus on the coastal Chukchi and Beaufort Seas and is a continuation of a 4 week Arctic cruise that took place in Sept 2016. The original cruise was to have been a 7 week cruise but due to complications with research and the timing of fall whaling we broke the cruise into two shorter cruises. After much discussion we received general approval from the Alaskan Eskimo Whaling Commission to operate in coastal waters in August with the understanding that we would be out of the Arctic by the first week in September and well south of Barrow by August 25. This was a hard fought compromise.

Are you or any member in your science party bringing in any science equipment items which are regulated for export by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR)?
No If yes, have you applied for the necessary permits through your export control office? No

ports and dates of intermediate stops
or to list additional port stops
Prefer Nome to Barrow ports but could Barrow to Nome or Seward, Barrow to Barrow, or Nome to Nome as long as we have sample time in the coastal and offshore regions of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. We may need to add transit days if the ports were Seward to Seward . We plan to sample en route between Nome and Barrow.

Explain Instrumentation or Capability
requirements that could affect choice
of ship in scheduling.

We would require a CTD, the ability to set up flow through incubations on the deck 4 degree C, -20 degree C and - 80 degree C sample storage. We also require access to flow through uncontaminated seawater. The ship would also need to be able to operate in the Arctic Ocean.
