Summary of Field Work: |
comprehensive surveys of the Chuckhi shelf between Cape Lisburne and Barrow via 1) continuous surface seawater observations of nutrients, carbon, and dissolved gases, 2) high resolution CTD surveys along historical transects; 3) towed pumping sled surveys along historical survey lines; 4) multicores for surface sediment sampling |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
Substantial capacity for underway seawater instrumentation (6 instruments pulling > 10 L /min) with overboarding drains Clean 480V power and capability to tow sled with CTD and in situ pump Well-maintained CTD rosette with calibrated sensors for oxygen, backscatter, fluorescence, PAR Multi-coring capacity Ice-capable vessel for operations in potentially ice-encumbered regions |

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
|
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
The Sikuliaq is well equipped to handle our science needs on a number of fronts: science seawater system is well designed and able to deliver high volume flow and overboarding capacity for 6 separate instruments towed pumping sled - we have learned from experience in 2016 how to mount and power the sled for a successful 2017 operation on Sikuliaq. We would prefer to not repeat the trial and error process on anew platform as we have less time. CTD/rosette package - The Sikuliaq has a well-maintained rosette and sensor suite that is critical to our high resolution surveys. Their marine technicians provide excellent support for CTD ops.
In terms of scheduling, the 2017 days are rolled over from days funded in 2016 where we were unable to access the coastal ocean due to potential conflicts with whaling out of Barrow and Wainwright. In order to complete our cruise objectives, which require accessing coastal regions (e.g. Barrow canyon) , we need to have a start date early enough to ensure clearance from AEWC. In the past this has been Sept. 15th, but our experience last year suggested that there is resistance to activity in coastal regions after Aug. 25th. |
