Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project Title: RUI: Vitamin B12 and nitrogen regulation of oceanic dimethylsulfoniopropionate and dimethylsulfide Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Peter Lee, COFC Project Institution: COFC
Project ID: 104248 Version #: 3
Date Submitted: 2/19/2014 7:45:00 AM Created By: Peter Lee

Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE - 1436458 - Funded
Summary of Field Work: Assessing the role of vitamin B12 and nitrogen availability on the regulation of oceanic dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) and dimethylsulfide (DMS).

A series of 8 expeditions over 2 calender years (4 per year) would examine the seasonal and spatial variability of vitamin B12 concentrations and its impact on DMS and DMSP degradation in the South Atlantic Bight near Savannah, Georgia. During each 6-day expedition, hydrographic and DMS profiles would be collected along an approximately 400 nautical mile transect running from the inner continental shelf out to the Sargasso Sea. Based on the results of this survey, two stations would be selected and occupied for 12-24 hours to carry out more intensive metatranscriptomc and metaproteomics sampling of the phytoplankton and bacterial communities. Ideally, the expeditions in each year will be scheduled to coincide with the timing of key events (based on currently known hydrographic and B12 data):

1) mid-March - winter temperature minimum/B12 maximum
2) mid-May - spring warming
3) late July - summer temperature maximum/B12 minimum
4) late September - autumn cooling.
Summary of Facility Requirements: We will need a CTD/Rosette (including ISUS sensor), deck incubators (with flowing seawater),
