Summary of Field Work: |
Collect pressure measurements on top of benchmarks using the JASON ROV to repeatedly deploy a mobile pressure recorder. Maintain the network of Bottom Pressure Recorders. Collect high resolution AUV bathymetry data and shipboard bathymetry data. This work will continue critical measurements of magmatic activity and inflation at Axial Seamount to document the post-eruption volcanic re-inflation after its April 2015 eruption.
The MBARI AUV (D. Allan B.) will be used in year one. The Sentry AUV will be used in years 2 and 3 to resurvey selected multibeam sonar tracklines to document uplift of the seafloor at Axial Seamount over time and to collect these data at the same time as the previously funded Jason ROV-based pressure measurements at an array of benchmarks on the seafloor. Jason and AUV operations will be simultaneous and overlapping at times.
To accomplish the tasks above, we request 10 days of ship, ROV, and AUV time each year in 2018 and 2020. We request 14 days of ship, ROV, and AUV time in 2019--the 4 extra days in 2019 will be used to integrate terrain relative navigation (TRN) onto Sentry. This request includes 5 days per year for the MPR pressure surveys and AUV re-surveys (which can be accomplished simultaneously), 1 day per year for the autonomous BPR turn-arounds, 1 day per year for the ship-based multibeam surveys, and 3 transit days (assuming in and out of Seattle). |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
R/V Thompson with the Jason ROV for years 1-3 and the Sentry AUV for years 2 and 3. MBARI AUV (D. Allan B.) is requested in year 1. EM302 shipboard multibeam bathymetry system. |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
We really want to use the Thompson's EM302 (vs. EM122 on Revelle) for the repeat bathymetry. |
