Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Summary of Field Work: We will be studying various aspects of the mesozooplankton food web, from predator and prey distributions, to diet composition, to stable isotope signatures defining carbon production source during winter (non-upwelling) and summer (upwelling) periods of of Oregon and Northern California.

Biological sampling using Coupled MOCNESS (4 m2 and 1 m2); In Situ Ichthyoplankton Imaging System (ISIIS), and CTD.
Summary of Facility Requirements: ISIIS requires a fiber-optic cable and winch for realtime transfer of data. A new fiber-optic winch is available through UNOLS equipment pool (currently maintained by UM RSMAS) -- this winch would be preferred for use on the vessel. We will also require a .322 or larger conducting cable for fishing the coupled MOCNESS (preferably from the stern).

Requested Ship, Operating Days and Dates
Year: 2019 Ship/Facility: Sikuliaq
Optimum Start Date: 2/15/2019 Dates to Avoid: Our dates are tied to normal periods of upwelling/downwelling cycles so the range in dates is limited to those selected.

Repeating Cruise?
(within same year)
Yes Interval: ~ 4.5 months # of Cruises: 2

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: Our project goals are to sample during the peak of the winter downwelling conditions (Feb) and during the summer upwelling (June/July). These dates and physical conditions are also tied to the timing of spawning (and larval abundance) of the key study species.
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
Ship choice -- besides local vessel, we require a ship that can work in the coastal seas of wintertime Oregon and which can handle the deployment of both a coupled MOCNESS and ISIIS (including the required winches).

As described above -- our cruise date windows are relatively narrow and are tied to key environmental conditions (winter downwelling, summer upwelling and associated spawning times of target study species.

Total ship days are calculated one the follow -- each of two transects are to be sampled day/night twice during the cruise. Each day/night sampling of a transect will require 24 hours for ISIIS work, and 24 hours for MOCNESS and CTD work (full 48 hours X repeated twice = 96 hr (4 days) X 2 transects = 8 total days sampling plus 24 hour transect from northern transect to southern transect, plus 24 hour return to north at end of cruise. Total science days = 10 d.
Work Area for Cruise
Short Description of Op Area
for use in schedules:
Oregon/N. Calif
Description of Op Area: Study will involve two 100 km onshore/offshore transects. One is located off Newport Oregon, one is located near Crescent City, CA.
Op Area Size/Dia.: Study area is ~ 100 X 200 miles = 20K sq miles

Explain Instrumentation or Capability
requirements that could affect choice
of ship in scheduling.

Request new fiber-optic winch in UNOLS equipment pool maintained by WHOI winch pool (below). If not available, then will use .681 fiber-optic available through OSU. The value of the new winch and cable is that it is of finer diameter and allows much easier operation of ISIIS.

As to Operator provided MOCNESS -- we are only requesting the 1 m2 NETS, not the whole system. Preferably 333 um.

As noted above, our MOCNESS will require launch/recovery over the stern as the unit is roughly 3.5 m wide and high. Launch/recovery of ISIIS is also over the stern -- but the operations are separated by day.

We will also need CTD with NISKIN Rosette - standard bottles.
