Summary of Field Work: |
Characterization of phytoplankton communities within different regions of the California Upwelling Zone.
This work will consist of hydrographic surveys of upwelling regions using underway measurements and CTD depth profiles. At specific sites seawater will be collected for large incubation experiments that will be conducted over several days. For the surveys, the ship's CTD/rosette and seawater loop as well as a towed water collection system will be used for water collection. For on-deck incubation experiments, a trace metal clean pumping system to collect water from depths down to a maximum of 100 m will be used. The cruises will be ideally be scheduled to coincide with the west coast upwelling period (May - September) |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
Ship underway seawater loop, CTD /rosette, ADCP, sufficient deck space for on-deck incubation experiments, equipment for over the side towed instrument deployment and radioisotope van (possibly). |
