Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning ( Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project Title: Collaborative Research: From hot to cold in the dark - shifts in seafloor massive sulfide microbial communities as physical and geochemical conditions change after venting ceases Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Jason B. Sylvan, TAMU_CS Project Institution: TAMU_CS
Project ID: 105877 Version #: 4
Date Submitted: 8/10/2017 11:04:00 AM Created By: Jason B. Sylvan

Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE/BIO - 1756339 - Funded
Summary of Field Work: This project will consist of two cruises to EPR 9N to study the transition in microbial community and mineralogy of hydrothermal vents during the first year post-venting. We will sample multiple active hydrothermal vents, splitting samples into three sections. One will be recovered on the same dive for analysis, and two will be left on a platform (we plan on using an elevator) to incubate for a few weeks (t1, collected during same cruise) and a year (t2, collected during second cruise). For the first cruise, we are requesting 12 dive days, and 6 for the second. The proposed field sites are Bio9/P vent area and Biovent area.
Summary of Facility Requirements: we will need NDSF resources for this project. for two cruises, either HOV Alvin or ROV Jason II is requested, either one will be sufficient for the work proposed. we will also likely need two elevators to be left on the seafloor between the two cruises. funds ($8000, determined by discussion with Dan Fornari) were requested for this extended use of the elevators in the NSF budget and do not need to be considered here. it is likely that we will use one or two additional elevators for normal shuttling of samples/supplies to and from the seafloor during these cruises. we will also need the Titanium Major samples.

Are you or any member in your science party bringing in any science equipment items which are regulated for export by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR)?
No If yes, have you applied for the necessary permits through your export control office? No
 Questions about ITAR/EAR regulations?

Explanation/justification for requested
ports and dates of intermediate stops
or to list additional port stops
Manzanillo is approximately one day transit from the EPR 9N site so is the most appropriate port. this is one of the standard ports for EPR 9N cruises.

either Alvin or Jason are appropriate for the proposed work. hydrothermal vent samples will be collected and manipulated on the seafloor, which requires either HOV or ROV presence.
