Summary of Field Work: |
Characterization of hurricane-induced changes to sponge assemblages at sites known to be previously exposed to different levels of land-based stressors surrounding the island of St. Thomas, USVI. Changes to sponge assemblages and biomass will be characterized in permanent transects and quadrats, and additional quadrats will be delineated to assess the rate of change in sponge assemblages and potential sources of sponge recolonization. Sponge samples will be collected for population genetic analysis. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
SCUBA diving from small boats, nitrox for at least some dives, wet lab counter, dry lab counter, hood, balance for sponge biomass measurements (we can provide if necessary), freezer, vacuum filtration apparatus, basic glassware/plasticware |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
Note: this is in response to a RAPID award that has been invited (and therefore provisionally accepted pending our final submission). Since this is a RAPID, the goal is to access St. Thomas' reefs ASAP to address short-term hurricane impacts.
Two cruises are requested to initiate this study, since our sites are currently unsupported by local infrastructure damaged by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. We anticipate that subsequent field work can be accomplished using land-based support. |

Optimum Start Date:

Dates to Avoid: |
Since this is a RAPID response to Hurricanes Irma/Maria, the sooner the better. Proposal is not yet submitted, but we were told to start the UNOLS application before submitting to NSF. Need to know whether/when UNOLS can support us (and for how many cruises/which ports etc.) before submitting NSF budget. |

3-4 mo |

|
Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
Prefer 3 mo, but would consider up to ~4 mo after initial cruise. Ideally this is a quarterly study, and we anticipate that later field work can be supported from UVI's shore based facilities. |
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
NSF advised use of Walton Smith due to proximity and already scheduled for one USVI cruise. Transit days only needed if not already in USVI. |
