Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Summary of Field Work: This is a request for two 1-day cruises. Each cruise would depart from and return to MarFac/San Diego and operate within the South La Jolla State Marine Reserve, on the western edge of the La Jolla kelp forest. The primary objective of the two cruises is to play sounds from a controlled source at seven different locations in addition to two source tows along the coast of La Jolla. Environmental sampling (i.e., CTD casts) will occur at each playback location. A fish chorus will be recorded using a drop-down hydrophone.
Summary of Facility Requirements: R/V RG Sproul with sufficient deck space/A-frame, CTD and Knudsen 320 B.

Repeating Cruise?
(within same year)
Yes Interval: Approx 5 months after the first cruise # of Cruises: 2

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: The first cruise will be used to deploy the passive acoustic recorders. The second cruise, to take place approximately 5 months after the first cruise, will be used to recover the passive acoustic recorders.
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
RG Sproul is the ideal size and has appropriate passive acoustic recorder deployment/recovery capability. One day should be sufficient to transit to areas of interest and deploy or recover the passive acoustic recorders. The exact day for the two cruises is flexible within the spring/summer and fall time frames when the fish will be chorusing.
