Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Summary of Field Work: Deployment of sensors for wave measurements:
The objective of the field work is to deploy a package of instrument at roughly 50 m water on Louisiana shelf (perhaps using R/V Pelican) and retrieve the package after 2-3 months. Also, we will collect some flow data (using ADCP), weather data, and hydrography data (using CTD). We need to do this any time during winter or early spring and retrieve the package late spring, and deploy in the early fall and retrieve later in winter.
Summary of Facility Requirements: We will use the Pelican's ADCP, CTD, and weather system whenever possible to collect data as well. (the sensor package to be deployed will be provided by ourselves). We can also add a towed ADCP if Pelican's vessel-mounted ADCP is not available.
Summary of other requirements and comments: It should be a single day trip for each deployment and each retrieval, twice a year (i.e. each year we should have two deployments and two retrieval).

Repeating Cruise?
(within same year)
Yes Interval: 2 months between deployment and retrieval # of Cruises: 10

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: The scientific objective requires that we do deployment (1 day) and retrieval (1 day) for each deployment season. We will have two such seasons each year: one during fall-winter, the other during winter-spring. But 2018 is a little different because we started late so we will make a short deployment if possible during March (hopefully) and retrieve in April. If it is impossible to deploy in March, we can move it to April or May, and retrieve after ~ 2 months. Later in 2018, we need to deploy in Sept. or Oct. and retrieve after two months. In 2019, we need to deploy in Dec. (2018) or Jan. and retrieve in 2 months, and deploy again in Sept. or Oct. and retrieve in 2 months. In 2020, we need to deploy in Dec. (2019) or Jan. and retrieve in 2 months. We need a total of 10 days in 10 trips, each lasting one day. We will need R/V Pelican from LUMCON.
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
Our use of the vessel will be offshore of Louisiana at ~ 50 m water on the shelf. Pelican appears to be the best choice.
