Summary of Field Work: |
Deploy and recovery an array of twenty-five bottom-mounted CPIES (current pressure recording inverted echo sounders) in the central Gulf of Mexico. The array is centered near 26.1N, 87.26W. Measurement duration is ~18 months with capability of 36 months. Project will also include a telemetry cruise approximately 6 months after CPIES deployment. Full-water column CTDs will be taken at each site on each cruise. Water depths in array range from 2400 to 3400 m. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
Launch operations for CPIES require a stern A-frame with air-tugger or capstan or small winch for lifting about 240 lbs.
CPIES telemetry cruise will require a 12 kHz in hull transducer for acoustic signaling and telemetry reception.
Recovery operations occur along the forward starboard rail, assisted by a davit and either block-and-tackle or air-tugger, to lift pieces of about 80 lbs.
A CTD winch, shipboard CTD with back-up sensors are requested for hydrographic sampling.
A shipboard ADCP with frequency of 150Hz or lower is highly desirable. |

We would like to use a 12 kHz in hull transducer for acoustic signaling and telemetry reception. This is essential for the telemetry cruise. The CPIES relocation radio is standardly 156.875 MHz "CHANNEL 77" marine band. A Taiyo RDF on the bridge (or an updated equivalent) is helpful for CPIES recovery |
