Summary of Field Work: |
We will perform observations of bottom boundary layer processes in shallow water near the Ocean City Maryland Inlet that include profiles of the mean currents (from both waves and tides), profiles of the concentration and turbulent fluxes of mass and momentum, bedform geometry and shear strength and composition of the bed sediments.
The work will consist of both a deployment cruise and a recovery cruise. Ideally the separation between the deployment and recovery will 30 days or greater. The best time of year for our work is after the winter Nor’easter season and before the peak of hurricane season (must recover before mid-August). We will deploy two large bottom landers in shallow water outside the mouth of the inlet called "quadpods" that are heavily instrumented to perform a wide range of bottom boundary layer observations. We will also deploy a smaller bottom lander offshore of the mouth of the inlet to provide far field forcing conditions. Additionally, we will acquire sediment samples that will be taken back to the laboratory for analysis. We anticipate 2 days on station for each cruise to accomplish the work. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
We will need sufficient deck space for quadpods, and a large A-frame and winch for deployment and recovery. Each of the two quadpod weighs about 2,500 lbs. on the deck. The smaller bottom lander weighs about 300 lbs. on the deck. |
