The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

Summary of Field Work: Three cruises to sample larval distributions, collect brood stock, and deploy/recover bottom collectors and instruments near cold methane seeps in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Continental Margin. The goal is to determine the depths where larvae disperse, to inform biophysical models of connectivity, and to determine if larval processes limit the transport of seep larvae around the Florida peninsula.
Summary of Facility Requirements: All three cruises will use Alvin or Jason, and two of the cruises require Sentry with the SyPRID plankton sampler for precision sampling of larval populations in the water column.
Summary of other requirements and comments: On the ship, we need laboratory space with sufficient seated table space to accommodate up to 10 people with microscopes. One of two cold rooms to hold samples while they are being sorted, and cultures of embryos for the duration of the cruises. Fume hood for fixation of samples with glutaraldehyde, formaldehyde and DMSO.

Woods Hole is relatively near Baltimore Canyon, our northernmost site, and is a convenient port for mobilizing Jason and Sentry. Gulfport is near the final stations in the Gulf of Mexico. During the long transit around Florida, we request an offshore transfer off Port Everglades, without making an actual port stop or adding an extra day.
