Summary of Field Work: |
Updated on 28 JAN 2020: Cruise 1: April 1, 2021 from Mare Island Dock in SF Harbor to deploy 5 ASIS buoys off Santa Cruz, CA in northern part of Monterey Bay and 3 ASIS buoys off Marina, CA in central part of Monterey Bay..
Cruise 2: June 1, 2021 starting from Mare Island Dry Dock in SF Harbor to relocate/deploy 5 ASIS buoys off Santa Cruz, CA in northern part of Monterey Bay to Marina/Elkhorn Slough CA in central part of MB. Service 3 ASIS buoys at this location.
Cruise 3: August 1, 2021 starting from Mare Island Dry Dock in SF Harbor to service recover 5 ASIS buoys and redeploy off Asilomar, CA in southern part of MB. Service 3 ASIS buoys off Marina/Elkhorn Slough CA in central part of MB.
Cruise 4: October 1, 2021 recover all 8 ASIS buoys off Marina/Elkhorn Slough CA, in central part of MB and Asilomar, CA in southern part of MB. Return to Mare Island Dry Dock in SF Harbor. Multiple transects between buoy location and SF port location will be needed. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
Sally Ride will be able to deploy at least 2 possibly 3 ASIS in one sub-cruise and faster in transiting to MB. Also for the recovery 8 ASIS buoys with tether buoys will be inside Monterey Bay. Sally ride better suited to recover 3 buoys per sub-cruise (transect between MB and MIDD in SF harbor).
Stage out SF port like Mare Island Dry Dock location. |

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
No repeating cruises needed. |
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
Need R/V Sally Ride vessel with large crane capacity and reach and lots of deck space to line up 14 m long ASIS (spar-type) buoys and separate tether buoys with 60 m long surface tethers. Expect most of the moorings to be in relatively shallow water: 20 - 100 m water depth. Special moorings will be used to allow for complete recovery at end of experiment. Dynamic positioning is critical to perform mooring operations. |

Important Info on Foreign Research Clearances
|
|
Are you or any member in your science party bringing in any science equipment items which are regulated for export by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR)?
|
Yes |
If yes, have you applied for the necessary permits through your export control office?
|
No |
Questions about ITAR/EAR regulations?
|
Comments about foreign clearance requirements or description of any other special permitting requirements (e.g., MMPA, ESA, IHA, Marine Sanctuaries, etc.) |
Yes, both ITAR and EAR instrumentation are possible. No permits needed, because we stay within US territorial waters. Marine Sanctuary permit needed. We will acquire such. |

Explain Instrumentation or Capability requirements that could affect choice of ship in scheduling. |
Crane to be able to lift 3500 lbs and extend to 18 ft. Crane/winch to lift anchor from bottom.
WHOI will provide own winch for mooring operations.
|
|
|
Explain Major Ancillary Facilities Requirements and list description and provider for "other" systems. |
The Mare Island Dry Dock location in San Francisco port is suitable because large dock space for assembly of buoys and storage capabilities.
Also, transit time to Monterey Bay is about 1/2 day. |
