Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

  Sentry Mapping EPR  -  2019  -  Atlantis
  Project Information
Project Title: Tracking the Run-up to the Next East Pacific Rise (EPR) Volcanic Eruption Near 9° 50’N:
1. Sentry AUV Surveys to Establish the Pre-eruption Surface of the EPR Crest Between 9° 45’-53’N
Project Status: Submitted

Summary of Field Work: There is an urgent need to more completely map the ‘pre-next’ eruption seafloor in the 9 45’-53’N EPR area, which was subjected to the volcanic eruptions emplaced in 2005-2006. Having the pre-eruption surface will be essential to quantitatively understanding the erupted volume of lava as well as the volcanic emplacement processes associated with a MOR seafloor eruption, and the impacts to the hydrothermal system along this portion of a fast-spreading MOR where so many research experiments have been carried out and which is still a focused area of study for many biologists, chemists and marine geologists.
Summary of Facility Requirements: AUV Sentry with wave glider for 12 days on station. the Wave glider is essential for the Sentry surveys to not negatively impact the conduct of the Alvin diving or RV Atlantis operations at night when Sentry is diving. We would need to use the wave glider from WHOI to ensure good communications and navigation for Sentry. That additional capability is estimated to cost ~$30k and NDSF Sentry group has requested this directly via their facility operations grant.

The Sentry mapping program that would be accomplished during the already funded/planned ~10 days of on-station time that are needed for the Alvin dives to accomplish the Sylvan and Mullineaux field program. That amount of on-station time is sufficient for us to accomplish both the Sylvan off-axis extinct vent mapping and the larger ‘pre-next eruption’ near-bottom multibeam and sidescan mapping with the Sentry AUV.
Summary of other requirements and comments: 5 sentry ops team members plus 2 scientists to oversee the Sentry field data acquisition and processing (Fornari and Parnell-Turner). Fornari and Parnell-Turner do not require any additional funding for this data acquisition effort (either travel or salary - we can find internal institution funds to support our work to acquire the data). 2 Sentry operations personnel will be able to berth in Alvin berthing - this has been confirmed by Bruce Strickrott - the Alvin group manager.

Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
We are requesting the Sentry AUV for mapping during an Alvin dive program to the EPR crest at 9 50N for Jason Sylvan and Lauren Mullineaux. A wave glider is needed so that the Sentry ops do not interfere with the Alvin or RV Atlantis operations.
