Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning ( Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

  Project Information
Project Title: AtlanticNoise OBS recovery Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Nathan Miller, USGS-WH Project Institution: USGS-WH
Project ID: 106523 Version #: 1
Date Submitted: 6/24/2019 3:41:00 PM Created By: Nathan Miller
Date Last Modified: 10/9/2019 1:29:00 PM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: USGS - NONE - Funded
Summary of Field Work: This cruise will recover 6 intermediate period ocean bottom seismographs. The OBS are recording ambient seismic noise and the data will be used to characterize physical properties of slope sediments. If time allows, we will also test various marine geophysical instruments.
Summary of Facility Requirements: back deck, A-Frame or ship's crane for OBS recoveries, hull-mounted Knudsen CHIRP, acoustic communications, dry lab space

Foreign Clearance and Permitting Requirements
Foreign Clearance Required? No Coastal States:

Important Info on Foreign Research Clearances

Are you or any member in your science party bringing in any science equipment items which are regulated for export by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR)?
Yes If yes, have you applied for the necessary permits through your export control office? No
 Questions about ITAR/EAR regulations?

Comments about foreign clearance requirements or
description of any other special permitting requirements
(e.g., MMPA, ESA, IHA, Marine Sanctuaries, etc.)
USGS has performed a NEPA review and approved the instrument deployment and recovery prior to the deployment. The instruments are not within any restricted area or sanctuary.
