Summary of Field Work: |
This project entails two cruises to Station Aloha (Hawaii) and one to Sta. M (California) to sample the water column and abyssal seafloor from small particles to large megafauna. Sampling will include CTD casts and in situ particle filtration using McLane pumps for the water column to a depth of 4600meters. Benthic sampling will be done with benthic landers, benthic sled tows (sled provided - Hawaii only), and ROV sampling (Lu'ukai or Jason). ROV sampling will include sediment cores, megafaunal collections, and transecting. |

We understand that ROV Lu'ukai is still in the testing phase. It is our preferred ROV if fully functional (for Hawaii cruises) by the time of our proposed cruise but we will request Jason if it is not. |

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
We require two cruises to Station Aloha, one that is timed for the peak export flux to the seafloor (July/Aug 2019) and another that is timed for the low period of flux (Jan-Feb 2020). The total days requested includes only the second cruise. NOTE: We have two banked days of shiptime from the termination of our July 2019 cruise due to ROV loss (we are requesting 10days in the schedule but only 8 days for funding). This request is to make up the sampling we were unable to complete on that cruise now that the ROV has been successfully recovered. |

Kilo Moana is the obvious choice of ship out of Honolulu. As noted above, we have two banked days of shiptime from the termination of our July 2019 cruise. This request is to make up the sampling we were unable to complete on that cruise in July/Aug 2020. |

2-4 participants from each of the 4 coPI's teams (including themselves) will participate in the cruise for sampling. In addition there will be the ROV team and we request 2 OTG technicians to assist with back deck work - landers, CTD/pumps, and sled sampling. |

Due to the wire limitations on the Kilo Moana and our need for both the 0.681 and trawl wire we propose to conduct ROV operations first then terminate and run benthic sled sampled during the last two days of the cruise. We will provide landers, McLane in situ pumps, and the benthic sled.
