Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project Title: Testing of Hadal Water Column Profiler Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Glenn Carter, UH_SOEST Project Institution: UH_SOEST
Project ID: 106626 Version #: 1

Funding Agencies: OTHER - NONE - Funded
Summary of Field Work: The Hadal Water Column Profiler is a multidisciplinary 11km-rated instrument currently under development at the University of Hawaii. It will measure temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbulent microstructure, horizontal current velocity, 200 kHz bioacoustics, and video. In addition it can capture eleven 150 ml water samples.

The requested ship time is for initial at-sea testing of final profiler. This work will be conducted in approximately 4000m water depth close to Hawaii. Prior to this work the individual and integrated systems will be tested in the lab, individual components pressure tested to 11km, and the final assembled profiler pressure tested to 6km. The at-sea testing will be used to confirm the operation / identify issues with the the profiler and its subsystems. Additionally, the data collected will be used to develop data processing and data management software.
Summary of Facility Requirements: We will require a vessel with a high A-frame, sufficient to launch and recover the instrument, a CTD/rosette, and a hull-mounted ADCP.
