Summary of Field Work: |
Characterization of the impact of deoxygenation on the cycling of Mn, N and C in the sediments and water column of the Gulf of Mexico. We aim to characterize the speciation of Mn in the soluble and particulate phase. As Mn is a strong redox reactant, we will assess how its speciation impacts the diagenetic reactions of Mn and C in sediements. In particular, we want to assess the stability of Mn(III)-L complexes, which we know are differentially stabilized based on the nature and availability of organic matter. Thus, we will conduct Mn, and N speciation, measure fluxes of Mn and N from the sediments to overlying water and characterize the sedimentary organic matter and organic ligand binding to Mn.
To conduct this research, we will use 3 research cruises over the course of 4 years, each cruise in a different season: Spring, Summer and Fall. This is because each season has different fluxes of both nutrients and organic matter. To characterize these fluxes, we will conduct vertical and horizontal transects, including a "source-to-sink" transect in the Mississippi River. We also include 3 shelf stations, of varying bottom water dissolved oxygen content, to assess how the oxygen content of the Gulf of Mexico impacts Mn speciation in the water column and its delivery to the sea floor. We will also measure rates of oxidation in the water column and oxic-anoxic interfaces, and grow Mn-oxidizing bacteria to compare abiotic and biotic oxidation rates. In the sediments, we will conduct porewater profiles of Mn, N and C, and deploy a benthic lander to measure fluxes from the sediments to overlying water.
Our overall goal is to characterize speciation, reaction rates and fluxes across 3 types of gradients (1) oxygen (2) salinity and (3) phase (solid to soluble). |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
We will need a CTD/Rosette - ideally a trace metal clean rosette (8-24 bottles), equipped with dissolved oxygen and pH sensors. We will need a multi-core and core sleeves. We sufficient deck space and an A-frame for benthic lander deployment. We need a radioisotope van for Mn-54 assays. We need space in the wet lab for a semi-clean bench space for metal assays. We need deck space for ship-board incubations - a flow through incubator would be desirable but not necessary. |
