Summary of Field Work: |
Investigation of ecological role and significance of the gelatinous pelagic tunicate Dolioletta gegenbauri and their influence on microbial processes on the continental shelf of the South Atlantic Bight (SAB). This work will consist of a mix of short (2 days) frequent cruises in the SAB to the mid-shelf and two longer cruises to that will complete a transect from 31°N 80°W in the SAB to 23°N 86°W in the Gulf of Mexico (Campeche Banks). Over the course of the 3-year project period we will complete 20 short cruises so that over the 3-year period we will sample during each season multiple times and 2 longer transect cruises. The longer transect cruises will ideally be conducted during August 2019 and January 2020. During each project year we will also host 2 one day cruises for K-12 educators in June and July. During each cruise we will locate and collect zooplankton and water and process samples shipboard. The research will require CTD casts to characterize the water column collect water and a variety of net tows. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
We will need a CTD/rosette, A frame and J-Frame hydrowinch equipped with ¼ inch wire. We will supply the specialized plankton nets and in situ imager, but will require a benthic trawl net. Sufficient deck space for plankton and benthicc net tows. Sufficient deck space and flow thru seawater for 2 deck incubators. Suitable temperature controlled laboratory space for wet work. Availability of work van for radioisotope work. Sufficient laboratory space for collecting and processing zooplankton and for filtering and processing water samples, -20°C and +4°C storage. |
