Summary of Field Work: |
this shipform was updated may11,2003 upon approval of Dave Epp and Linda Goad; we request 1 additional day in port prior to cruise and 3 additional days at sea; for the first of the three proposed curises; we also need dredging equipment for geochemical analysis though I don't know where to enter this Amendment July 2005: requests for cruises 2 and 3 updated. This was originally proposed as one single cruise but we need to separate the recovery and redeployment of OBSs. The split was approved by Dave Epp in December 2004. If the time window between these cruises is 3 months, then the ideal end port for cruise 2 is San Diego, or any port along the West Coast, to ship the instruments back to WHOI. If the time between cruises is less, then the end port should be Honolulu so that the instruments can be refurbished there. Then, ideally, the start of cruise 3 should be where cruise 2 ended. Cruise 2 can start as early as December 2005.
A Revelle/Melville size ship is needed. The Kilo Moana is not suitable for cruise 2, because the recovery would required a zodiak to pick up the instruments. This is dangerous and would require day-time recovery, which would require additional days at sea. The KM is also impractible for cruise 3. We need to have 4 full-size vans on board, together with 35 OBSs. One van operates as Lab van and needs to be on the same level as all the OBSs. Access by an operating crane is required to all 4 vans. |
