Summary of Field Work: |
The purpose of this cruise, part of the ONR-funded "Archipelago Dynamics DRI", is to to provide opportunities for marine scientists from Philippines Institutions, to conduct an observational program to quantify the mesoscale bio-physical interactions in the Philippines straits system. Measurements of the near-surface mesoscale circulation are planned using hydrography, shipboard ADCP and EM-APEX floats. Water properties measurements will include nutrients, pigment, phyto- and zoo-plankton sampling. Coring will be perfomed to assess the signatures in the sediments. These observations will be used to describe quantitatively the interactions between the atmospheric forcing, the physical response of the ocean, and the corresponding bio-geochemical processes. Additionally, moored instruments and drifting buoys will be deployed in preparation for the subsequent Intensive Observation Period of the ONR DRI. The emphasis will be on training young scientists and students from Philippines institutions in the various observing techniques. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
Dates firm in schedule. Scientific party 22 Philippines 9 US 3 resident techs 4 Philippines observers, total 38. Full complement of resident techs needed given training aspect of the cruise. Web access to cruise prospectus available on request, contact chief scientist. |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
will recover and deploy shallow ADCP moorings; small boat assistance necessary |

CANCELLED **Two 20-footer to be loaded in Kaohsiung and delivered to Iloilo in support of land remote sensing of currents. Chief scientist will arrange clearance in Iloilo** CANCELLED
Space permitting, mooring gear and drifting buoys to be loaded in Kaohsiung in support of subsequent IOP cruises in 2008.
Request that equipment from prior cruises be entirely offloaded and put in storage in Kaohsiung.
3/13/07 added liquid scintillation counter and specified quantity of C14 3/14/07 corrected amount of radiactive material
Photosynthetic rates will be determined at selected stations. Sampling depths will correspond to light levels of 100, 50, 10, and 1% of the surface irradiance.
Photosynthetic rates and primary productivity will be measured using the isotopic (14C) tracer method established by Steemann Nielsen [1952] and improved by Evans et al. [1987] and Ning et al. [198
