Summary of Field Work: |
To better meet the PhilEx science objectives the ONR/PhilEx researchers at their meeting in February 2007 reached a conclusion that the pair of IOP cruises should be carried out in Jan-Mar 2008 and Jan-Mar 2009, rather than in Jan-Mar 2008 and Jul-Sept 2008. Each Jan-Mar time frame will focus on a specific Strait, Mindoro/Tablas in 2008, and another [likely Surigao] in 2009. Each region has different complexities of geometry and difference local and remote ocean forcing. Additionally, it appears that winter presents more active features than does the summer season.
There are two cruises in each of the IOP activities: one is regional in scope [Gordon]; the other provides a more detailed look at the specific strait environment [Lee].
This shiptime request is for the regional cruises [Gordon, ch sci] and is therefore closely linked to the specific strait cruises [ Lee ] during the 08 and 09 IOPs.
We have assumed a 5-day port period between the two legs of each period. There may be substantial offload/onload of equipment between legs (shifting from CTD/LADCP to towed vehicle modes of survey) |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
the science party will include Philippine research participants, total number to be determined. In addition to the researchers, 3 or more observers will sail, one each from the Philippine Navy, Coast Guard, and other Philippine government agencies as required by the Philippine DFA permit. |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
Field work will be primarily CTD/LADCP stations within the Philippines archipelago with some stations outside the Philippine territorial waters. In addition to the CTD/LADCP stations, 4 EM-APEX floats will be deployed. A suite of moorings is scheduled to be deployed from the Joint cruise on MELVILLE immediately preceding this one (2008); however, if, for reasons of weather or other delays, some or all of the deployments can not be done on the Joint cruise, they will be done on this (IOP Regional) cruise.
*Comment: the intermediate stop at Dumaguete is for personnel exchange by small boat only, no entry into port is expected. Requirements will be similar to those attendant to the brief call at Cebu during the June-July '07 Melville cruise.
A Lowered Acoustic Doppler Profiler system will be mounted on the CTD/Rosette frame. The system used during the June/July '07 cruise worked extremely well, and would be suitable for this cruise as well. The science party will provide a salinometer and oxygen titration system, both of which can be installed in the analytical lab. If there is insufficient space for both systems, the oxygen titration system can be installed in the darkroom/wet lab forward of the hanger.
We assume the mooring winch will remain on board from the previous cruise (Joint cruise) and so will be available if we must complete installation of moorings which could not be done on the previous cruise. |
