Summary of Field Work: |
Study biogeochemical mechanisms of nutrient transformations and oxygen-removal in the northern Gulf of Mexico (NGOMEX) region that is characterized by the development of low-oxygen regions on an annual basis. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
We need a research vessel in the NGOMEX region, which is capable of sampling the water column and sediments and with enough laboratory space to accomodate a variety of experiments. The research vessel must be capable of accomodating at least 12 scientific personnel. A computer guided CTD system with 12 20-L Niskin bottles is required. Box coring facilities may be needed. |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
Skilled winch operators are crucial for collecting cores and other samples are needed. |

Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
We chose the R/V Pelican becasue it is the right size and equipped right for our research needs. The home Port of the R/V Pelican is located very near the stations that we need to sample in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The R/V Pelican has been used previously for our research on the NOAA grant and is an ideal vessel in terms of meeting our research needs. The daily cost for this vessel is about right for our budget that was funded by NOAA.. |
