Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

  Project Information
Project Title: Collaborative Research: Evolution and hydration of the Juan de Fuca crust and
uppermost mantle: a plate-scale seismic investigation from ridge to trench.
Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Suzanne M. Carbotte, LDEO Project Institution: LDEO
Project ID: 102317 Version #: 1

Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE/MGG - 1029411 - Funded
Summary of Field Work: The proposed program involves acquisition of multi-channel seismic and OBS refraction data along three long transects (250-470 km) of the Juan de Fuca plate.
Summary of Facility Requirements: We require the R/V Langseth to operate in "2D" mode with one 8 km long streamer and the full airgun source array. We are also requesting 41 short-period OBSs from the OBS Instrumentation Pool equipped with 3-component seismometers and hydrophone. We are requesting time on an additional ship to carry out the OBS deployment and recover operations.

Requested Ship, Operating Days and Dates
Year: 2012 Ship/Facility: Wecoma
Optimum Start Date: 7/1/2012 Dates to Avoid: There is a short weather window within the NE pacific within which the cruise needs to be scheduled. Our experiment involves MCS operations that require calm weather conditions to successfully deploy the gear and acquire data without excessive weather-related noise on the streamer.

Earliest Start Date: 6/1/2011 Multi-Ship Op: Yes
Latest Start Date: 9/1/2011 Other Ship(s): This is proposed here as a multi-ship experiment with the Langseth which will provide the airgun source for the OBS lines, and will be used for the MCS survey. The Wecoma will be used for OBS deployments and recovery.

Description of Repeating cruise requirements:
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
The Langseth is requested for full MCS operations and for shooting the OBS transects (25 days). We are requesting an additional ship to conduct the OBS deployment and recovery operations (32 days) which will include a 6 day holdover period while the Lansgeth is shooting the MCS transects. The Wecoma could perform other work during this time but we include this stand by time in the total days request here for the Wecoma. The full program could also be conducted on the Langseth, if this was considered preferable given ship schedules and funding.
