Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning ( Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project Title: Collaborative Research: Connectivity in western Atlantic seep populations:
Oceanographic and life-history processes underlying genetic structure
Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Cindy L. Van Dover, DUML Project Institution: DUML
Project ID: 102368 Version #: 1
Date Submitted: 2/10/2010 1:28:00 PM Created By: Cindy L. Van Dover
Date Last Modified: 12/16/2012 2:11:00 PM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE/BIO - 1031050 - Funded
Summary of Field Work: This study couples oceanographic, life history, and genetic components to explore oceanographic transport processes with concurrent studies of dispersal and connectivity at seep sites (Barbados, Blake Ridge, Alaminos Canyon, Brine Pool, Florida Escarpment) of the Intra-American Sea.

There were 4 mooring/MOCNESS cruises (deployment or recovery) and 3 deep-submergence sampling programs (with MOCNESS) planned during a 3+ year field window.
Summary of Facility Requirements: COMPLETED WORK
May 2011: Barbados mooring deployment/MOCNESS
Jun 2012: Barbados JASON sampling cruise with MOCNESS
Aug 2012: Blake Ridge SENTRY
Oct 2012: Blake Ridge mooring deployment

Sampling Cruises: First quarter 2014: Leg 1: Blake Ridge Jason sampling; Leg 2: Gulf of Mexico seep sampling

Moorings: The schedule for these needs to be negotiated among the PIs and NSF/UNOLS. The NSF award ends 2014; recovery of moorings in 2015 as suggested in the simplest approach outlined below is thus problematic and does not meet all of our needs.

Mooring recovery: Blake Ridge (coincident with 2014 sampling cruise?)
Mooring deployments: GoM (coincident with 2014 sampling cruise?)
Mooring recoveries: GoM regional class vessel ( first quarter 2015?)

We would like to add SENTRY to our Gulf of Mexico work (especially Florida Escarpment) and telepresence through the Inner Space Center at URI. These activities are under consideration by the science party and operators before proposing to NSF.
Summary of other requirements and comments: We had indicated in this space that sampling cruises needed to be complete before 2014, since the award runs out at the end of 2014 and shore-based sample processing and manuscript preparation will take up to 2 years or more post cruise. Because all of the sample analyses are dependent on having samples from each location, we can already see that there will not be adequate time to complete the work before the award runs out, even with a 1-yr no-cost extension.

We would like to add SENTRY to our Gulf of Mexico work (especially Florida Escarpment) and telepresence through the Inner Space Center at URI. The potential to undertake these activities are under consideration by the science party and operators.
