Summary of Field Work: |
We request support for two dive programs, in Summer 2011 and 2013 (deferred from 2012 because of mechanical problems), one and three years following drilling in Summer 2010 (IODP Expedition 327). The total ship/dive time requested is 23 days, 11 in 2011 and 12 in 2013, including contingency time for weather and mechanical delays. Tasks to be completed in Summer 2011 include: (a) download pressure data, (b) collect borehole fluid samples from depth at the wellheads, (c) exchange wellhead OsmoSamplers at Sites 1301, 1027, and SR-2, (d) deploy automated microbial fluid samplers on one or more wellheads, (e) attach an autonomous flow meter to the CORK in Hole 1362B, and (f) open a ball valve, initiating a cross-hole experiment through long-term free flow from the wellhead. We anticipate fluid discharge at 5–10 L/s from the open valve for the subsequent year. Tasks in Summer 2013 will be similar, except that we will recover the flow meter and close the ball valve at 1362B, allowing formation pressure to recover, which comprises a second part of the cross-hole test. We will also deploy a flowmeter on the ball valve on Hole 1362A. Additional analytical (lab, computational) work will determine fluid and microbial characteristics, and evaluate coupled fluid-thermal-chemical flow processes in the crust. Both dive programs will include significant education, outreach and communication (EOC) components, comprising (along with a major EOC program now being planned for IODP Exp. 327) an opportunity for long-term engagement by non-scientists on ship and shore. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
We will require a global class research vessel with Jason, or could possibly work with the new Alvin. Preference for Jason explained on following page. We also request scheduling within early part of weather window because several of us have another expedition (with Jason) scheduled for Fall 2013, need to use some of the same equipment. |
